Circle of Stephen Pearce


1819-1904 portrait of lt. general sir john hunter littler g.c.b. full length, seated on his grey charger, a battle beyond oil on canvas 111 by 90 cm.. 43 1/2 by 35 1/4 in. The sitter began his distinguished Military career in 1800 as ensign in the 10th Bengal native infantry, rising to major in 1824. He served in India and Java and in 1841 was appointed major-general. In 1843 he was put in command of the Agra division of the Bengal army, and fought galantly at Marharajpur following which he was made K.C.B. In 1845 the first Sikh war broke out and Littler distinguished himself in his manoevres before the battle of Ferozeshah and at the battle itself in December. At the close of the campaign he was made G.C.B. and deputy governor of Bengal. He retired with the rank of lieutenant general and lived at Bridgewater in Devon. He married Helen, daughter of Henry Stewart, a claiment of the Orkney peerage.
