Album of watercolours of Indian, princes, trades and architectural monuments


Company School, North India, probably Lahore, c.1850-70 sixty leaves of watercolours, each labelled in English, bound in an album with stamped red morocco bindings, edges slightly frayed 20. 4 by 28cm. Provenance: An inscription on the opening flyleaf records that the album was purchased by a Dr G L Davie at Lahore on 7th October 1870. The watercolours in this album are finely painted, especially the portraits of Sikh notables on the first few leaves. The figures include Maharajas Ranjit Singh Karak Singh, Sher Singh and Dilip Singh. The trades include water-carrier, carpenter, weaver, barber and entertainers. The monuments include the Golden Temple at Amritsar, the Juma Masjid at Delhi and several mosques in Lahore.
